LEAD OTM

Student Leadership Team

Eligibility:

Any student who has completed the 9th grade as of May 2026.

Athletic Requirements:

None, although experience in track and field is a plus.

Application Deadline:

March 6

LEAD OTM is first and foremost leadership focused.

Our goal is to help students develop leadership skills and practice those skills in a track and field environment.

Applications are accepted through March 1.

Successful candidates will be entrusted with upholding our core LEAD team values:

L

Lead by example in everything you do

E

Esteem others through your words & actions

A

Amplify a unified team environment

D

Demonstrate integrity in your character & decision making

LEAD OTM members will have the flexibility to choose between training alongside the team or assisting in coaching areas during practices. As a part of the LEAD team, athletes will receive an OTM jersey and LEAD team t-shirt. They will also accrue volunteer hours for their involvement. This presents an excellent opportunity for student athletes to accumulate community service hours, enhance their college resumes, and actively contribute to track and field community while refining skills in their preferred disciplines.

01

Oversee a "mini team" of athletes during warm-up and cool-down sessions at practices. Both sessions are led by a coach.

02

Lead discussion questions (provided) with your mini team at the end of each practice.

03

Assist in set up/break down of practice equipment.

04

Volunteer at the OTM Mary Birdwell Memorial Meet on Saturday, May 30th at Hoover High School (when not competing)

05

Read provided leadership book and participate in a biblical based discussion on leadership after practice for roughly 30 minutes one time a week during our training season. For reference, the 2024 season book was "Make Your Bed" by Admiral McRaven and the 2025 season book was "Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations" by the Harris brothers.

Expectations

Being selected for LEAD OTM is an honor and a responsibility. Leaders are not only representing themselves, but also setting the tone for younger athletes and for our entire club community.

Leaders are accountable for consistency, punctuality, preparation, and example-setting before, during, and after practice.

Time & Attendance Standards (Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning May 19th through the last full week in June, from 6 to 7:35)

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early so you can meet your mini-team and be ready to lead at 6:00.

  • Be present for the full practice window (including warm-up + cool-down responsibilities).

  • If you must miss, you communicate as early as possible (ex: by noon the day of practice), and YOU help arrange coverage for your mini-team.

“Lead by Example” Standards

  • Before practice

    • Be prepared: positive attitude, ready to work, ready to lead.

    • Welcome athletes into your mini-team (especially new kids).

  • During practice

    • Follow coach instructions quickly and help your mini-team do the same.

    • Encourage, correct respectfully, include others, have a positive attitude

  • After practice

    • Help close practice well: cool-down leadership, equipment storage, and a strong finish.

    • Leave the space better than you found it.

  • Book & Discussion Preparation Standards

    • Leaders read the assigned section each week and come ready with: 1 takeaway, 1 question, 1 application (how it affects practice, competition, or life)

    • Leaders participate in the weekly biblical-based leadership discussion after practice.

Accountability Process: Our goal is growth, not punishment - but leadership requires reliability and accountability.

  1. Coach check-in (conversation + reset expectations)

  2. Probation week (clear goals for punctuality/prep/example)

  3. Role adjustment or removal from LEAD OTM (if patterns continue)

If selected for LEAD OTM, I commit to the following:

  • I will arrive 10–15 minutes early to each practice to be ready to lead my mini-team.

  • I will lead by example (attitude, effort, respect, encouragement) before, during, and after practice.

  • I will read the assigned leadership book sections and come prepared with a takeaway, a question, and an application.

  • I will communicate early if I’m going to miss and take responsibility for helping arrange coverage.

  • I understand that repeated lack of punctuality/preparedness/example-setting may result in probation or removal from the LEAD OTM role.
